“Haircuts are a pure representation of the aesthetic means we take to assimilate. We become like one another, or differentiate ourselves in bases of trend, of preference, of taste, of geographic location or headspace.
Haircuts grow, undisturbed, parallel to the passages of time. The messier one’s hair gets the easier it is to prescribe aesthetic displeasure. A good haircut is about beauty, a prospect of desire. A bad haircut is an appropriate means of dis-assimilation as any righteous act of counterculture, whether advocated for or not.
Haircuts are context clues in a postmodern world of dramatics and contradiction, when meaning is transfixed just as much in form as in content. How do you differentiate the two in a haircut itself? Does it matter?
Haircuts are about care. They are about the presentation of self within a society structured around discursive aesthetic devices of control – telling us how to be, what to value, how to present. Here, we present ourselves and others, artifacts and scenes passed by, haircuts (or lack thereof) and all.”
